CENTRAL. TRADITIONAL. ECONOMICALLY STRONG.

Weil am Rhein was first mentioned in a document on 27 February 786 under the name Willa. The special location between the Rhine and the foothills of the Black Forest favours an exceptionally southern climate and offers excellent conditions for viticulture. It became a town in the middle of the 19th century due to its favourable transport situation. The population grew with the arrival of the railway and the construction of the Basel-Weil marshalling yard (1913) as well as lively building activity. On 16 August 1929, Weil and its then districts of Friedlingen, Leopoldshöhe and Otterbach were elevated to the status of a town and at the same time given the name ‘Weil am Rhein’. In 1934, the Rhine harbour was built, which is of particular economic importance today more than ever due to its location in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland.
